Container Dome Shelters for Ammonium Nitrate Storage on Mine Sites

Ammonium nitrate is one of the most widely used blasting agents in the Australian mining industry – and one of the most strictly regulated. If you’re storing security-sensitive ammonium nitrate (SSAN) on a mine site, your storage structure needs to provide heavy-duty weather protection. It also needs to support compliance with Australian safety requirements, provide proper ventilation, prevent unauthorised access, and hold up to the tough conditions of a working site.

Container dome shelters are well-suited to this application. Here’s what you need to know.

What the Regulations Actually Require

In Queensland, SSAN storage is governed by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) under Explosives Information Bulletin 53 (EIB53), which forms a condition of licence for any operation storing SSAN. Similar codes apply across other states and territories, most of which reference the WA Department of Mines’ Code of Practice for the safe storage of solid ammonium nitrate.

The core safety requirements that relate directly to your storage structure include keeping the space adequately ventilated, either through natural or mechanical means, so that decomposition gases can escape freely. The structure also needs to be enclosed and lockable to prevent unauthorised access, contamination, or tampering. It needs to offer reliable weather protection, keep the ammonium nitrate at a stable temperature below 55°C, and be constructed from materials that are compatible with ammonium nitrate. Separation distances from other hazards, protected places, and combustible materials must also be maintained.

These are best-practice recommendations, however storage of SSAN must also meet safety requirements as outlined in the Work Health Safety Act 2011, or, if on a mine site, the applicable mining legislation, plus any particular requirements outlined in the manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheet.

Why Container Dome Shelters Are a Good Fit

The arch design of a container dome works with several of these requirements in ways that more conventional structures don’t.

On ventilation, the geometry of the dome naturally promotes airflow. End wall configurations can be left partially open, fitted with air vents, or designed to allow air movement through the structure without compromising weather protection. This supports one of the primary risk controls for AN storage – ensuring that gaseous decomposition products can escape freely through natural ventilation.

When it comes to security, the dome can be fully enclosed with lockable end walls, controlling access to authorised personnel only. This directly addresses the SSAN security requirement for storage to be kept under lock and key and accessible only to those with appropriate clearance. Weather protection is important too, and the structure provides complete coverage from rain, UV, and temperature extremes, helping to maintain the stable storage conditions that ammonium nitrate requires. Temperatures within the storage area should not exceed 55°C according to WorkSafe Queensland, and the light-diffusing, heat-reflecting properties of the fabric cover help manage internal temperatures without the heat build-up you’d get from a steel-clad shed in the Australian summer.

The shipping containers that the dome mounts to also provide a clean, solid base that separates the stored product from the ground, supporting floor management requirements and keeping the storage area clear of drainage traps or confined spaces.

Built from the Right Materials

Our container domes are built with heavy-duty galvanised steel frames that are engineer-certified to Australian Standards and designed for long-term performance in demanding environments. The steel framework is non-combustible, and for high-risk site applications like ammonium nitrate storage, Container Domes Australia offers fire-resistant fabric cover options – including Titan FR PE and Canvacon® 9000e FR – specifically suited to sites where material compatibility and fire risk are part of the compliance picture.

Getting the cover specification right for your AN storage setup is something our team can work through with you based on your site conditions, licence requirements, and the quantity of product being stored. It’s not a one-size-fits-all decision, and we’d rather have that conversation upfront than have you second-guess it later.

Relocatable When Your Operation Moves

One of the practical advantages of a container dome over a permanent structure is that it can be dismantled and relocated when a project wraps up or operations shift. For mine sites where the AN storage location needs to change as the blast pattern moves, or where the entire operation relocates, this matters. You’re not locked into a fixed footprint, and you’re not writing off a permanent structure when the site closes.

Important: Always Verify Compliance for Your Specific Site

Container dome shelters can support compliant SSAN storage setups, but the right configuration for your site will depend on the quantity of ammonium nitrate being stored, your licence conditions, your state or territory’s specific regulatory requirements, and the recommendations of your licensed explosives handler or safety advisor. Before specifying a shelter for AN storage, we’d recommend reviewing the applicable code of practice and confirming requirements with your relevant regulator – in Queensland, that’s RSHQ’s EIB53.

Australia’s wind regions also matter for any mine site structure. Check out our Australian wind regions guide to make sure your shelter is specified for the right wind loading for your location.
