THE SCOPE OF WORKS
Container Domes Australia delivered multiple certified relocatable shelters for the Queensland Government’s $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project, one of Australia’s most significant public transport infrastructure undertakings. With 10.2 km of rail alignment, including 5.9 km of twin tunnels beneath Brisbane River and the CBD, the project required robust onsite logistics, strict compliance standards, and fast deployment of support infrastructure.
The scope was broad and varied, reflecting the complexity of the project. Structures ranged from a double-stacked workshop dome with a 5-tonne gantry crane mounted to the containers, through to smaller workstations and storage shelters across multiple site locations. Container Domes Australia also designed and installed a custom COLORBOND® skillion roof shelter over a high-voltage station, demonstrating our capacity to engineer fit-for-purpose solutions beyond our standard dome range.
Our engineered solutions met stringent compliance requirements while maintaining critical project timelines in a high-risk urban construction environment, reducing site setup time and adapting seamlessly to ongoing works across multiple construction phases.
THE CHALLENGES
Managing one of Australia’s largest active infrastructure projects, the projects construction team required a relocatable shelter solution with specific operational and compliance parameters:
Wind Region B compliance with full certification
The shelters needed to meet Wind Region B requirements under AS/NZS 1170.2:2021 standards, with complete engineering documentation for regulatory approval and safety audits.
Rapid deployment without project delays
Installation had to occur quickly with minimal disruption to active construction operations, avoiding any impact to critical project milestones across the multi-year construction program.
Safety certification for major infrastructure environments
All structures required compliance with stringent safety and certification standards mandated for major government infrastructure projects, including comprehensive quality assurance documentation.
All-weather protection for high-value equipment and personnel
The shelters needed to provide complete weather protection for expensive construction equipment and onsite personnel working in exposed urban construction zones.
Future relocation and scalability requirements
The solution had to allow for relocation or extension as the project evolved across different construction phases and site locations throughout the rail corridor.
Elimination of hot works permit requirements
The client required a weld-free installation solution to avoid time-consuming hot works permit processes that would delay deployment on a tightly scheduled government infrastructure project.
THE SOLUTION
Container Domes Australia designed and delivered a customised container dome system, mounted to 40-foot shipping containers, within a four-week timeframe from initial consultation to onsite installation. Meticulously engineered and manufactured entirely in-house at our ISO-certified Sunshine Coast facility, the solution was tailored to the specific needs of this high-visibility, high-compliance infrastructure project.
The scope encompassed a range of purpose-built structures across the project corridor:
- Custom COLORBOND® skillion roof – 90m²
- 12 x 12 container-mounted dome
- 12 x 18 container-mounted dome with rear full end wall
- 20 x 24 x 4m apex double-stacked container-mounted dome with front and rear end walls, roller doors and PA doors, and staircases and landings on both sides
- 8 x 12 double-stacked container-mounted dome
- 15 x 24 x 4.2m apex double-stacked container-mounted dome with front and rear end walls, roller door and PA door, and gutters
The shelters incorporated our weld-free Twistlock Mount system, eliminating hot works permit requirements completely. This installation method enabled quick, safe deployment without drilling or welding through containers, making it ideal for sites using hire containers or operating under strict safety protocols.
Our base rail system provided superior waterproofing and reduced site preparation requirements, while the fully modular design gave the client flexibility to scale or reposition shelters as site conditions evolved throughout the construction program.
All structures were engineered and certified for Wind Region B compliance to AS/NZS 1170.2:2021, backed by our 10-year structural warranty and 20-year UV cover warranty. Our in-house installation team completed the setup, coordinating directly with the client’s engineers and safety personnel to ensure seamless integration into active site operations without disrupting critical construction activities.
This wasn’t an off-the-shelf solution. It was the result of meticulous engineering and a collaborative approach between our experts and the client’s project team, demonstrating our capacity to deliver fit-for-purpose infrastructure for Australia’s most demanding construction environments. All engineering, fabrication, quality assurance, and installation were completed in-house, ensuring complete control over project timelines and quality outcomes.
