The Scope of Works
Container Domes Australia (CDA) was awarded the contract to design, manufacture, and install a purpose-built warehouse facility for Liberty OneSteel—now operating as InfraBuild—at its Whyalla site in South Australia. The project was undertaken to centralise and streamline stores operations within a single, efficient warehouse solution.
Whyalla Steelworks plays a critical role in Australia’s industrial landscape, producing approximately 75% of the nation’s structural steel and standing as the sole domestic manufacturer of rail products.
The Challenges
Integration of Fire and Emergency Systems
Given the scale and configuration of the facility, integrating compliant fire safety systems and emergency lighting presented a significant challenge. Container Domes Australia developed a tailored solution aligned with Australian fire code standards
Logistical Constraints
The Whyalla Steelworks site, located in regional South Australia, presented additional challenges due to its remote location. Transporting the dome cradles, coordinating the installation team, and ensuring timely completion required meticulous planning to avoid delays and maintain project timelines.
The SOLUTION
Container Domes Australia’s in-house design team engineered a custom 30-metre-wide container dome, mounted to the outer edges of 20 high-cube 40ft shipping containers. This innovative design achieved a clear internal span of 25 metres and extended to an overall length of 126 metres—delivering significant operational space while maintaining structural integrity and efficiency. Our qualified and fully ticketed Installation Team oversaw all works on-site, including all civil and electrical works, with zero safety incidents reported during the project.
Container Domes Australia met the stringent requirements outlined in OneSteel’s project scope by implementing a robust quality assurance system in line with ISO 9001:2008. This included the provision of comprehensive documentation such as material certificates, inspection and test plans (ITPs), certificates of compliance, and detailed welding records. All works were executed with minimal disruption to the operational steelworks site, and Container Domes Australia ensured full compliance with OneSteel’s departmental safety protocols. This disciplined approach reflected Container Domes Australia’s commitment to quality, safety, and operational integrity on a high-risk, heavy industry site.
