Choosing the right container dome size is one of the most important decisions in the process, and it comes down to three things: the height, span, and length your operation requires.
Getting the size wrong means compromised capacity, wasted spend, or a structure that doesn’t meet compliance requirements for your site. On the other hand, getting it right is straightforward when you know exactly what to look for.
Container Domes Australia has been designing, engineering, and manufacturing fit-for-purpose shelter solutions for over a decade, with structures deployed across Mining, Oil & Gas, Civil & Construction, Farming & Rural, Ports & Logistics, and more. This guide brings together everything you need to know when selecting your dome size, such as how to calculate clearances, when to consider a custom solution, and which configurations suit different industries.
Whether you need a container dome for a remote mining operation, a major civil project, or a rural property, the starting point is always the same – your dome needs to fit your operation, and your equipment needs to fit inside.
Start With What You Need to Cover
Before you look at any sizes, make a note of what the structure actually needs to accommodate. This gives you the three key figures that will drive every sizing decision.
First, height. Measure the tallest item or vehicle that will operate inside, including any movement, such as a forklift mast at full elevation, a crane hook at working height, or the roof of a haul truck. Allow sufficient clearance above the highest point to ensure safe, unobstructed operation, as the right margin will depend on your specific equipment and how it moves within the space.
Second, width. Measure the widest item at its widest operational point, then allow clearance on each side for movement and personnel access. What’s appropriate will vary based on your equipment type and how your team works around it.
Third, length. Account for everything that needs to be accommodated simultaneously, including the space between items and any circulation requirements.
These three figures, height, span, and length, are what you’ll need to match to the available dome dimensions.
Our Product Range: Standard Domes, Container Sheds & Custom Solutions
Understanding where your requirement sits within our product range will help you to narrow the specification process quickly.
Standard Domes cover the majority of industrial, commercial, and operational applications. These are typically container-to-container configurations, spanning the gap between two parallel rows of containers to create a covered workspace. If your clearance calculations fall within the standard size chart below, this is your starting point. Standard configurations are available off the shelf, engineer certified, and ready to customise with the features and mounting options described below.
Container Sheds offer an alternative structural profile for applications where the dome arch isn’t the right fit. Available with a choice of roofing options, including COLORBOND® sheeting for a permanent, weather-tight finish, or Canvacon® cover for a lightweight, flexible solution, they retain the same post-mounted or container-mounted, modular approach.
Custom Solutions are the right path when your site, operational, or council requirements fall outside the standard range entirely. Our in-house design and engineering team works directly with your project team to create fit-for-purpose configurations, including non-standard dimensions, integrated end wall systems with endless options for access, alternative fixing options, electrial and water management, and double and triple-stacked configurations. And because design, engineering, manufacturing, and certification are all handled in-house, turnaround is fast without sacrificing compliance outcomes.

Selecting The Right Width
Standard widths run from 6 metres up to 21 metres, though not every size in between is available as a standard configuration. The most commonly specified widths are 6m, 8m, 9m, 10m, 12m, 13m, 15m, 18m, and 21m.
One thing worth understanding for our Standard Domes range: the apex height is determined by the width of the dome, not selected independently. A wider dome produces a higher apex. So if your primary requirement is internal height – say, a maintenance bay for large plant – you’ll often find yourself selecting width based on the apex you need, then confirming the span works for your equipment.
Where standard widths don’t produce the clearance your application requires, extended apex options and custom-engineered configurations are available. Explore our Custom Solutions here.

Our Standard Container Dome Sizes
The following standard sizes are available to suit 20-foot containers (approximately 6m base length) and 40-foot containers (approximately 12m base length). All standard configurations are engineer certified to Wind Region A, B, C or D, Level of Importance 2, Terrain Category 2, per AS/NZS 1170.2:2021.

Length: The Fully Modular Dimension
Length is the most flexible dimension in a container dome specification. The bay system allows multiple modules to be joined end-to-end, extending covered length without compromising structural integrity or engineering certification.
A 40-foot container base gives you 12m wide x 12m long of covered area as a single unit, so joining two together gives you 12m wide x 24m long. And with custom engineering, the possibilities extend well beyond that. Container Domes Australia has delivered structures exceeding 200m in length for large-scale operational footprints including processing facilities, logistics staging areas, and extended maintenance bays.
The good news is that length is also the easiest dimension to plan for future growth, as a modular structure can accommodate additional bays as your operation expands.
Single vs Multi-Container Configurations
Our standard container domes mount to either single stacked, 20-foot or 40-foot containers. Double-stacked configurations add height to the structure, which is a common choice for workshop facilities that need overhead gantry crane clearance. Triple-stacked configurations are also available for applications requiring even greater internal height.
Containers can be General Purpose (GP) or High Cube (HC), with HC containers providing additional base height that carries through to the overall structure. Single-stacked GP containers sit at 2.6m, HC at 2.9m, double-stacked GP at 5.2m, and HC double-stacked at 5.8m, all before the dome structure itself adds apex height above.
Multi-container configurations are fully supported, and all are engineer certified to the same AS/NZS 1170.2:2021 standards as single-container installations. Our in-house engineering team handles the load distribution and compliance assessment as part of the design process.

Additional Features & Customisation Options
Size is only one part of the specification. Once you’ve identified the right dimensions, there’s a wide range of customisation options that shape how your structure performs on site, and all of them are covered in our Customisation Guide.
One thing to remember is that mounting systems determine how the dome attaches to your containers. Our Weld Mount System provides a permanent, highly secure connection for long-term fixed installations. Our Twistlock Bracket System offers a weld-free alternative – no hot works permits, no container damage, and easy removal if your structure needs to relocate. Both options are engineered to meet the same compliance standards.
End walls and access options transform an open canopy into a fully enclosed, weather-protected workspace. Half end walls provide ventilation with partial protection, while full end walls offer complete enclosure and can be fitted with roller doors, PA doors, barn-style gates, bi-fold gates, or tautliner curtains depending on your access requirements.
Additional features including guttering and water management, LED high bay lighting, electrical systems, fire and emergency systems, and logo and branding options are all available and integrate seamlessly with both standard and custom configurations.
Industry-Specific Sizing Guidance
Mining, Oil & Gas
Remote mining sites typically require wider span configurations to accommodate light vehicles, maintenance equipment, and personnel movement simultaneously. Wind Region C or D certification is standard across the Pilbara, Kimberley, and northern Queensland. Double-stacked configurations are well suited to heavy maintenance bays where overhead crane clearance is a requirement. And because these structures are relocatable across their 20+ year service life, choosing a dome sized for the operation rather than just a single site significantly reduces total cost of ownership.
Civil & Construction
Major infrastructure projects need rapid deployment, the ability to scale across construction phases, and full engineering documentation for regulatory sign-off. Our Twistlock Mount system eliminates hot works permit requirements entirely, so your dome can be installed quickly and efficiently with no delays, and no compliance red tape.

Farming & Rural
Wider span configurations are a strong fit for farm machinery storage, grain protection, and general equipment shelter, depending on the scale of your operation and what you need to cover. The 20-year UV warranty and cyclone-rated structural certification deliver long-term asset protection that traditional sheds can’t match at equivalent cost.
Ports, Logistics & Commercial & Industrial
Extended length configurations maximise covered area relative to your structural footprint, making them well suited to covered storage and loading zones. The modular bay system means your covered space can grow as your operation grows for future space maximisation.
What Sizing Looks Like In Practice
The Cross River Rail infrastructure project in Brisbane is a good illustration of how operational requirements drive size selection across a single project scope.
Container Domes Australia delivered multiple certified relocatable shelter configurations for the project – each sized to a specific function. Compact configurations served as workstations and storage areas where footprint and deployment speed were the priority. A 15m wide x 24m long x 4.2m apex double-stacked dome with full end walls and roller doors provided the enclosed, high-clearance workspace that heavy equipment and personnel required. And a custom skillion roof shelter covered a high-voltage station where a standard dome profile wasn’t appropriate.
Every structure was specified to match a distinct operational requirement, which is exactly the process this guide has walked you through.
