The Scope of Works

Container Domes Australia, in partnership with Okara, delivered a custom-built agricultural dome to support the processing of mushroom compost at Mercer Mushrooms’ facility in Pukekawa, New Zealand.

The facility was designed to withstand the highly demanding composting environment generated during mushroom processing, while providing a durable, low-maintenance structure for long-term use.

Okara provided full installation services, including assembly of the shelter and footings, under the supervision of Container Domes Australia, ensuring smooth project execution and prompt resolution of any on-site issues.

The Challenges

Mercer Mushrooms’ mushroom compost production generates:

  • High moisture levels
  • Corrosive gases that can rapidly deteriorate standard steel structures

Traditional steel sheds would quickly corrode in these conditions, threatening structural integrity and operational efficiency. Additionally, the project required a shelter large enough to accommodate processing operations while providing accessibility and durability.

The SOLUTION

Container Domes Australia manufactured and supplied a custom, ground-mounted truss frame dome with a fully hot-dip galvanized steel frame and a fabric cover that resists moisture and corrosive gases.

The design provides a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution for the demanding composting environment.

Paul Whitla, Container Domes Australia: “We partnered with Mercer Mushrooms to deliver a dome capable of handling a highly demanding composting environment. The hot-dip galvanized frame and fabric cover provide a durable, low-maintenance solution that allows their operations to run efficiently and confidently in harsh conditions.”

Phil Casey, Okara: “Okara and Container Domes Australia have collaborated on several major projects across Australia and New Zealand, from standard 18m-wide cyclone-rated domes to fully custom 50m-wide ground-mounted shelters. The Container Domes team is consistently easy to work with, delivering high-quality products and workmanship. Their after-sales support is excellent, and any on-site issues are resolved quickly and without hassle.”

The partnership with Okara ensured professional installation of the shelter and footings. Their hands-on approach allowed for smooth delivery and minimized site issues.
